Importing a Full Site

Some design sets offer their whole site, not just individual designs. Importing one gives
you every page, header and footer the set contains, styled with its variables and
selectors — a finished site you then edit into your own.

This is the fastest way to start a new project, and the most destructive thing the Design
Library does. Read what it replaces before you run it.

Step 1 — Open the Design Library

In wp-admin, go to Oxygen → Design Library. Sets that offer a full site appear as cards
with a preview image.

Only complete-site sets appear here. Sets meant for browsing piece by piece live in the
builder instead — see Using the Design Library in the
Builder
.

Step 2 — Preview it

Hovering a card gives you Live Preview and Import. Live Preview opens the set's site
so you can walk through it as a visitor before committing.

Step 3 — Read the confirmation carefully

Import opens a dialog that spells out what is about to happen.

  • Your Variables, Selectors and Oxygen settings are replaced by the set's.
  • Every page, post and template in the set is imported alongside your content.
  • Your existing Templates, Headers, Footers and Components are moved to the trash.

Trashed items are recoverable — they sit in the WordPress trash until it empties. Variables
and selectors are not: they are overwritten in place. Import onto a site you are starting,
or take a backup first.

Step 4 — Run the import

Confirm Overwrite & Import starts it and reports each stage as it goes. Leave the tab
open until it finishes.

"Nothing to import" against a line simply means the set has none of that kind of content —
a set without popups says so and moves on.

Step 5 — Set your homepage

The import brings the set's home page in as a page, but it does not make it your front
page. Go to Settings → Reading, choose A static page, and pick the imported home
page.

Load the front end and you're looking at the set's site, running on yours. Everything in it
is ordinary Oxygen content: open any page in the builder and edit it.

Troubleshooting

There are no cards, only "Your Design Library is empty"

Either no design sets are registered, or the ones that are don't offer a full-site import.
Add a set under Oxygen → Settings → Design
Library
→ Custom Design Sets
. If it still doesn't
appear here but does appear in the builder's Design Set list, that set simply isn't offered
as a complete site.

The import finished but the site looks unstyled

Check that the variables and selectors stages reported success in the progress dialog. If
they errored, the designs are on your site but the design system behind them isn't — open
the Design Library in the builder, select the same
set, and use Import Settings to bring them over on their own.

My old templates are gone

They're in the trash, not deleted. Oxygen → Templates, Headers, Footers and
Components each have a Trash view you can restore from.

The import stopped partway

Each stage is a separate request, so a timeout on a large set leaves the earlier stages
done. Run it again. Pages the first run already brought over are matched by title and
skipped as long as their content still matches the set, so a clean re-run doesn't duplicate
them — but a page you have since edited comes in again as a second copy.
